Introduction

Beacon of Hope Crisis Center is a confidential and safe place where individuals who experience domestic violence or sexual assault victimization can receive services and referrals. Our advocates assist with safety planning and let victims know what services are available to them. We assist in many ways. For example, help prepare filings and paperwork, accompaniment, help locating a bed in a domestic violence shelter, fostering pets while victim(s) are in emergency shelter, helping with the healing process, and counseling. We also help victims make steps toward independence and self-sufficiency for long-term improved quality of life.

Logo

We have re-branded our agency and have integrated the lotus flower into our logo because of what it represents.  The lotus flower is often associated with domestic violence and sexual assault and with purity, healing and enlightenment.  This sense of purity arises from how it grows.  It begins in muddy water, rises above it and turns into a beautiful flower that reaches light/enlightenment, the lotus flower is a symbol of strength, healing, purity, perseverance, promise and enlightenment.

We have chosen a color palate that has significant representation to our work.  The hue of purple represents the color for domestic violence.   The hue of teal represents the color for sexual assault violence.  The hue of orange represents the color for teen dating violence.  These are areas of major focus throughout our services and programs offered here at Beacon of Hope Crisis Center.

History

  • In 2007, the agency was founded by three courageous women and became incorporated as Beacon of Hope Center for Women, Inc.
  • In 2009, the agency opened its doors, providing services to domestic violence victims.
  • From 2009 to 2016, the agency was located on the West Side of Indianapolis.
  • In 2016, the agency leadership changed, Sandra Ziebold, began leading the organization, and the agency name was changed for doing business as Beacon of Hope Crisis Center.  This same year, we became a dual agency providing services to both domestic violence and sexual assault victims of crimes.  Additionally, our agency made clear that we serve all survivors in need of services, expanding to serve not only women and children but also men.
  • In 2017, the agency was relocated to the South Side of Indianapolis.  This decision was the result of studying and analyzing the data of whom we were serving and the scope of the area we were serving.  We had discussions with other agencies and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and were overwhelmingly encouraged to fill a void in this area and to move forward.  We chose to move to Perry Township as that was a central location for all those we were serving.  We serve Central Indiana primarily, and we are now more centrally located within our primary service area.  These changes have increased the number of individuals we have been able to serve, and this includes the number of victims we are actively serving in the township where we were located previously.
  • Throughout 2018 - 2021, we focused on strength, quality, and sustainability.  Our services and programs grew exponentially, and our community, hospital, and law enforcement partnerships grew as well.
  • In 2022, we improved in the way we assist those with disabilities and those with medical needs caused by domestic violence and sexual assault trauma through innovative endeavors. We elevated our intake process to better identify strangulation and head-and-neck trauma victims of crime that meet the criteria for brain injury assessment referral.  We improved by adding an innovative disability accommodation toolbar to our website. Making the information on our website easily available allows users to customize the website in the way they need it to work for them.  It includes text-to-speech functionality, Dyslexia tools, an interactive dictionary, and translations in more than 100 languages.  Additionally, the Recite Me tool provides people with disabilities a toolbar from any computer or device to better explore our website. Our goal with this achievement was to ensure that anyone in need of our services can find them.
  • In 2023, we focused on Beacon of Hope Crisis Center team members, community partners, supporters, and survivor allies rallying together and increasing support to help domestic violence and sexual assault survivors feel safety, kindness, and love!
  • In 2024, we focused on resiliency and continued enhancement of safety, education, and support surrounding the risk and impact of traumatic brain injury, which can result from blunt force head trauma and strangulation victimization amongst those we serve.  We will continue to build on our strengths, providing outstanding human services advocacy programming, collaborative partnering, and evidentiary understanding that domestic and sexual violence are often a medical emergency.
  • In 2025, we focused on building on our innovative initiatives with our chaplaincy and faith community partners. The violence level and number of clients served was high. We remained passionate about our mission and dedicated to helping those we serve get free from the grip of violence. At the end of June of this year, Sandra Ziebold, our amazing and loved leader for the past decade stepped away and passed the torch to her successor. On July 1st, Tiffany Wilson, having promoted within the organization since April 2016, began leading it as Chief Executive Officer. **Board of Directors Press Release**
Additionally, year over year we continue to focus on sustainability and spreading the message to the community that we need support to meet the increasing demand for our services.  Grant funding nationwide continues to be cut, and when grant funding is reduced, we have to do less or lean on others to hear our pleas to assist us so that we can continue our work.  We have state and federal support, but those are reimbursable funding sources that require a lot of money to be paid out before it is reimbursed back.  Funding is being reduced, and it is being reimbursed more slowly than ever.  Unrestricted funding support for operating expenses is vital to existence.  Ample cash flow is necessary to continue the amazing work that we are doing in our community.  Please donate today!
