Teens ( Ages 13-18 )
In Indiana, 10% of high school students reported an experience of forced sexual intercourse in their lifetime; 11% of high school students reported experiencing physical abuse from a boyfriend/girlfriend in the past year alone. Across the country, teens are affected by dating violence and often growing up without the foundations of healthy relationships. Alarmingly, one in three teenagers report being a victim of violence in a dating relationship. Almost one third of teen relationships are characterized as either unhealthy or violent. Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. Among adult victims of rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, 22% of women and 15% of men first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age. |
Young Adults ( Ages 18-26 )
A significant number of college women are victims of violence and abuse. In fact, 43% of dating college women report experiencing some violent and abusive dating behaviors including physical, sexual, tech, verbal or controlling abuse. Over one in five college women (22%) report actual physical abuse, sexual abuse or threats of physical violence. 52% of college women report knowing a friend who has experienced violent and abusive dating behaviors including physical, sexual, tech, verbal or controlling abuse. More than half (57%) of college students who report having been in an abusive dating relationship said it occurred in college. 58% of college students say they don’t know how what to do to help someone who is a victim of dating abuse. |
