Domestic Violence and the Holiday Season

The holidays are a lovely time to spend with friends and family. Many people try to get together and reminisce over the past year’s highs and lows. We also try to relax, recharge, and start fresh in the New Year. However, the cruel reality is that domestic violence doesn’t rest.
 
According to research, domestic violence increases over the holidays for several reasons:
 

• The financial stress from holiday shopping, finances, and planning can aggravate volatile personalities.
• The alcohol consumption that will often accompany holiday get togethers may incite arguments.
• Abusers might be more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol when they are taking time off work.
• When abusers are home from work, they are alone with their victims.

It is important to recognize the warning signs of domestic violence while spending time with family or friends. A family member or friend may be experiencing abuse. If anyone reaches out for help, listen, and believe them. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the warning signs of domestic violence.
 
Warning Signs of Domestic Violence

• Bruises or cuts that are visible
• Wearing inappropriate clothing to cover evidence of abuse (Ex: A sweater in the summer or sunglasses inside)
• Making up excuses for injuries more often (Ex: Stating that they “fell” or “cut themself”)
• Fear abuser will be angry if they change plans or go somewhere without telling them

• Doesn’t seem like themselves (Ex: Being unusually quiet or unusually happy showing a severe shift in behavior)
• Development of an alcohol or drug problem
• Signs of depression (Ex: Emotionally numb, fatigue, difficulty sleeping or eating, etc.)
• Isolation from loved one’s in physical interactions or contact overall
• Being late or canceling plans often
• Avoiding parties or activities they used to enjoy
• Stating they have no access to funds because their partner controls it

 
You might be wondering what to do if you identify possible warning signs. The most important thing is to make sure that you respect the survivor’s space and avoid putting them in harm’s way by calling them out. Find a way to speak with the survivor about your concerns in private rather than in front of others. Talking about domestic violence saves lives.
