Domestic Violence Awareness Month

#DVAM2024 #LeanOnUs #GivingSpreadsHope

Domestic violence can be a serious health problem.

Woman holding a bag. Life threatening violence. Over 4.5 million women in the United States have been threatened by intimate partners with firearms, and almost one million women alive today have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner.
Person with their head down. Stress. Exposure to violence in the home causes stress on victim’s mental and physical health.

Chronic stress can lead to digestive problems, fatigue, insomnia, pain, high blood pressure, a compromised immune system, and more.
Medical care is essential. Women seeking medical attention for head, neck, or face injuries are 7.5 times more likely to be survivors of domestic violence than women with other injuries. Some abusers will target violent attacks in areas that can be hidden, like the head.

Domestic violence is not the victim's fault.

Domestic violence is often misunderstood or minimized by our society. In reality, it's happening in our community to the people we know and love. Similarly to mental health, you cannot always see how someone is doing in their relationship. For example, posts on social media show 'perfect' relationships and families when victims are barely surviving day to day. For anyone impacted by domestic violence, consider talking to someone about your experiences. You don't have to go through this alone. Confidential Crisis Line: (317) 731-6140
